Summary and history of the Subaru Impreza

The first Subaru Impreza was officially launched in 1993, but production of the car will continue this year. Unlike the previous version, the 2005 Subaru Impreza is actually a true facelift, the base model being updated with a new interior and some new features not present on the previous models. The 2003 version of the Subaru Impreza was more of an engine upgrade, as the 2.5 RS sedan, 2.5 TS wagon, and Outback sports car received a new 165-hp 2.5-liter engine. Additionally, the parent company added cruise control, a CD player, and power windows and locks as standard on all models of the car, unlike earlier versions when they were only fitted to the top trims or available as options.

Subaru actually means "to unite" and refers to the six stars in the logo that represent the 6 companies united under the FHI group. The largest of the stars represents Fuji Heavy Industries. The company started in Japan in 1917 as an aeronautical research laboratory, but soon transitioned into aircraft manufacturing.

After World War II, the company built a scooter, the Fuji Rabbit, using aircraft parts. Soon after, the company was divided into different companies that made scooters, buses, engines and chassis. Then CEO Kenji Kita decided it would be a good idea to go into car manufacturing and soon the first Subaru car, the Subaru 1500 (1954), appeared.

The 1500 or P1 was followed by the 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, the G, the 1100 and the R2 in 1969. The Leone came out in the 1970s and then in the 1980s they added to the Subaru range the Alcyclone (1985) and the Legacy (1989).

During the 1990s, the company slowly moved away from making small cars and focused on rally cars like the Vivio and Impreza. Various versions of the Impreza WRX have won multiple world championships with drivers like Colin McRae.

Using technology from the aircraft industry, Subaru applied many successful inventions to the automotive industry. One of the first was the use of horizontally opposed "boxer" engines, as well as the use of a monocoque construction. Additionally, Subaru is the only automaker to offer all-wheel drive as standard on most of its models. The Japanese automaker was also the first to introduce the Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (ECTV), which replaces standard gearboxes and offers smooth acceleration that reduces emissions and fuel consumption.

Subaru is also very concerned about protecting the environment and has achieved an unprecedented record for its Lafayette, Indiana plant: 0 landfill status, meaning the plant generates zero waste. In addition, the company has an extensive recycling program for its own cars, not to mention a program for fuel-efficient and hybrid cars.

big car

I have had my new Impreza RS Wagon since 2005 and it has always been very reliable in all weathers. Mileage is good and always runs. I used it as a truck to transport my hobby and garden things. The HVAC doesn't blow cold air out the lower vents, but it's no different than the 2002 WRX truck I traded for it. This car is an owner for life.

big car for kids

I was looking for a car for my 16 year old son - ABS, airbags and 4 wheel drive are required (we live in CO). This car has enough power to drive through the mountains and gets 30 mpg. It holds all of his hockey gear and tires and parts are easy to find.

Impressive Impreza!

I just bought my 2005 Impreza 2.5 RS 5. I bought this car because I needed something that would be good in inclement weather, especially snow. It had to be good for decent fuel because I drive quite a bit for work. I also didn't want a car blah blah and I didn't want to spend over 3,000 on one. Well I bought the car with 157,000 miles for $1500! very clean inside and out! One owner since new and dealer serviced. I've put about 800 miles on it so far and I have to say I LOVE it! We only had about a foot of snow and this was unstoppable! The handling is excellent, the riding position is good, the shifts are good, although I think the gear lever should be higher. It is comfortable and fun to drive. The engine makes a great sound, I don't think it has an aftermarket exhaust, but it sounds great! The brakes are not that good. The pedal does not start immediately, you have to step on it to brake. I hear it's common on these cars. The decoration is nice, simple, but not boring. It gives you a sporty ride but you know it's a cheap box. The seats are nice and comfortable enough. The trunk is huge! Soaks up potholes and other bumps in the road very well. The doors feel very light. I think this is done to reduce weight and improve fuel economy due to the all wheel drive system. The radio is terrible! bad reception. The air conditioning is fine and the heat is very hot! I want to direct more. I have owned and still own some great cars and this Subie is so much fun to drive! There are a few things I have found that homeowners need to be aware of. Change the oil regularly, change the coolant every 2 years and make sure the battery terminals are not corroded. This is to help prevent head gasket problems on these cars. This car was stolen from this car to install a new air conditioning compressor. I have read that it is better to use Subaru etc coolants instead of traditional coolants. I would recommend this car to anyone as long as you do your homework. It's the best alternative to owning a large, gas-guzzling SUV. I was between a Subaru and a Nissan Xterra, but I really feel like I made the right choice! I could have gone in a front wheel drive vehicle but I really wanted 4x4 or 4 wheel drive and this Subaru is the better option in my honest opinion. Addendum: Previous owner did not replace timing belt tensioner, it slipped and ruined heads. Luckily my friend knew a Subaru nerd and the heads were rebuilt, covers, new valves, cleaned of all carbon deposits, clean pistons and piston walls, new belt and pulleys. It works amazing! More encouragement and pull the rev counter. It's amazing... but I'm bored. Insufficient performance. There isn't much snow here in New Jersey, so what's the point? Clumsy, tuned handling is a big plus on this car. Should have spent the money on the wrx.

Cheap and fun AWD car!

I bought this car last September to use as a winter car in place of my Mustang GT. I bought it with 93,000 km and now I have 104,000 km. Obviously the car is great in the snow. With 4 winter tires you can practically plow your way with the front bumper and still not get stuck. The car is comfortable but I find the seats a bit stiff (RS base) for longer trips. Fuel economy is excellent for this engine and AWD. I got a maximum of 32 mpg on the Autobahn at 120 km/h in winter. I would imagine 35mpg highway can be achieved in the summer. The resources are fine. The radio is bad; replacing the front panel will help. Parts are expensive (import). I would buy another!

"The best wrx ever!"

I bought this car with 167,000 miles on it. I had to replace the head gaskets which is very rare on turbo cars. Also, I had to replace simple things that wear out and change the oil. This car drives fantastic, the power is there when you need it, it sounds fantastic and it's a monster in the snow. It now has 233,000 miles on it and runs like new. I love this car!

"Worst car I've ever had"

I bought my 2006 Subaru almost two years ago with 140,000 miles on it. Heard the Subaru's are great and durable so I didn't think the higher mileage would be an issue. I'm busy with oil changes and basic maintenance, but in less than two years I've had to replace the alternator, water pump, clutch, brakes, rear shocks, and left front CV joint. About $4,000 total for all of this. The air conditioning and three issues that cause the check engine light to come on are still being fixed, including a misfire. In addition, the seats are rough, so driving in the summer in shorts is very uncomfortable. My experience with this car was absolutely horrible and with all the other makes and models available I would not be interested in buying a Subaru again.

“Excellent for a new driver”

I bought a 2007 Impreza to use in my son's first car. Sixteen, new driver and lives in Buffalo. Snow, rain, wind, we've had a lot, and this little car has weathered it all. I like the safety features and the car seems to fit that. Compared to the used car in its class, it hasn't broken the bank. The five-speed manual gearbox shifts easily and gives the car a boost. I have owned several cars of all types, but never a Subaru. I think this is definitely one of my best car decisions.
