Subaru's Forester has set the standard in the compact SUV class. But even this Goliath has a few years that are best avoided.
Em 1997,Subaruannounced aImprezabased on the cross that would be referred to as theForest ranger. The Forester's hallmark for years to come was its boxy exterior and rugged design.
A key difference between the Forester and its competitors is its low profile. In fact, the Forester sat so low that it didn't need the "tipping over" warning on the sun visor. This meant that the Forester had the capabilities of an SUV, but basically drove like a car.
Subaru described this feature as "tough SUV, easy car". When it was launched, the new Forester fit comfortably between the smallest and largest Imprezas.legacy. Without a doubt, he is a road legend.
But even legends have their pitfalls.Let's take a look at its history of awards, recalls and crash tests to find the Forester years to avoid.
First generation foresters (1998-2002)

The Forester got its sporty handling and good running condition from the automotive world. This crossover meant easy entry and exit, but also easy loading, as it was a little lower than competing SUVs at the time.
The first Forester received a 2.5 liter H4 engine with double overhead camshaft (DOHC). However, for the 1999 model year, this DOHC engine was replaced with a 2.5L H4 engine with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC).
Both engines were troublesome and were mated to either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. The standard AWD system used a 60/40 power split between the front and rear wheels.
However, the AWD system dynamically adjusted the power distribution as needed. On climbs, the AWD system brings more power to the rear. If the weight has been shifted forward, e.g. B. when going down a hill, the Forester added more power to the front.
first generation Förster: Years to avoid and better alternatives

Typical of the Subaru brand, the Forester was exceptionally safe. HeIIHSHe gave the forester an overall rating of Good. According toNHTSA, the Forester received one recall and just over 100 complaints averaged per model year.
Common problems with the first generation Forester included the vehicle not shifting into steering, rear wheel bearing failures, and the common Subaru problem of ahead gasket blowing.
Unfortunately, Subaru didn't fix the blown head gasket on any of the Forester engines. The original (1998) DOHC EJ25D engine head gasket had an internal leak.
While the SOHC EJ251 (1999-2002) engine was leaking out, which could alert drivers to the issue. However, a leaking head gasket is a leaking head gasket, so it's best to avoid it every year.
Second generation foresters (2003-2008)
The second generation Forester bore a striking resemblance to the previous model.Similar to previous generation, shared the platform of the Impreza, came standard with AWD and the 2.5 liter H4 engine returned.
However, many refinements have been made in the last generation. It was even bigger than the previous generation and bigger cargo space.
In addition, the new Forester weighed 100 kilograms less than the previous generation. This is thanks to the aluminum hood, perforated rails and hydroformed subframe. Other changes included a reorganized trim lineup and turbocharged engine offerings for later models.

Also, as with the last generation, there were around 100 complaints per average.NHTSAper model year. Common problems included a fuel smell in the cabin, rust on the subframe, and non-deploying airbags. It should be noted that these problems were mostly resolved in later model years (2005-2008).

Third generation foresters (2009-2013)
With a more round and less square design, the third generation Forester arrived in showrooms for themodel year 2009. Here, the Forester has gone from a station wagon to another small SUV.
The forester grew once more. Subaru made the Forester 3 inches longer, 1.8 inches wider, 4.3 inches taller and added 3.5 inches to the wheelbase.
Incredibly, even though the Forester has gotten "bigger", the interior and cargo space have shrunk. AWD remained standard and drivers continued to have the option of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
However, a new 2.5-liter 170 hp H4 engine was installed on the Forester.

As far as security is concerned, the third generation Forester did not disappoint. received aIIHSBest Safety Choice for Every Model Year. This is not surprising, as it has consistently received top marks.
However, when it came down to itreliability, Forester's character can only be described as questionable. According to Forester, around 140 complaints were received per model year.NHTSA. Common complaints included a faulty weld on the driver's seat, causing it to come loose and leak oil from the valve seals.
However, the biggest problem with the third-generation Forester was the airbags. The airbags were recalled nine times by Takata. When the airbag inflated, it spat out shrapnel, essentially sending a frag grenade straight into your face.
The headline for this generation is that Subaru has finally solved the head gasket leak problem. Originally, the Forester featured the same EJ25 engine that Subaru fitted to earlier Foresters.
However, in 2011 they replaced the engine with a modern FB25B engine. This not only improved fuel economy and performance, but also fixed the head gasket problem that plagued Foresters in the past.
Due to the high cost of repairing a blown head gasket, model years 2009-2010 are best avoided. Note that the turbocharged engine was never replaced, so third-generation turbocharged Foresters are still subject to head gasket failure.
Fourth Generation Foresters (2014-2018)
The fourth generation Forester was launched for themodel year 2014. With the release of a new Forester came big changes. As usual, the Forester has grown and received an inch longer wheelbase, 0.6 inches wider and 1.4 inches longer.
As the Forester has grown on the outside, logically so has cargo space and legroom in the rear seats. Subaru has also added its EyeSight driver assistance system as an option to the Touring Forester model. The EyeSight driver assistance system is Subaru's line of driver assistance systems.
Additionally, X-Mode has been added to Forester for the fourth time.Generation. This is used to prevent drivers from getting stuck in adverse weather conditions. The biggest update, however, is that a continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been added to the lineup.
Although the CVT marginally improved fuel economy, it halved the former 3,000-pound maximum towing capacity. Although the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. All other models came standard with the new CVT.
fourth generation. Förster: Years to avoid and better alternatives
- years to avoid: 2014-2018
The safety issue for the Forester is further reinforced with the fourth generation. HeIIHSawarded the Forester the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ for the 2014-2017 model years and received the Top Safety Pick award for the 2018 model year.
However, there is a catch. These awards were only given to Foresters equipped with Subaru Eyesight and special headlamps. The one area the Forester struggled to check for safety was the small front-mounted check on the passenger side.
In terms of reliability, the Forester averaged about 300 complaints per model year, according to the company.NHTSA. Common problems included poor ignition, excessive oil consumption, passenger airbags not deploying, a cracked windshield, and bad lower control arms.
Although the fourth generation does not suffer from the same problems as previous generations, it is not a reliable vehicle and therefore should be avoided.
Fifth Generation Forestry (since 2019)
The fifth generation Forester hit showrooms for the 2019 model year. Like its predecessor, the fifth generation has grown again by adding additional cargo space and additional cabin space.
Importantly, the new Forester made EyeSight and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto standard. Furthermore, only one engine and transmission will be offered in the new Forester, a 2.5-liter H4 mated to a CVT.
To maintain the status quo, the Forester comes standard with AWD. However, for the fifth-generation Forester, there are three configuration-dependent AWD systems.

The fifth-generation Subaru Forester is arguably the safest Forester yet. received aIIHSTop Safety Pick+ for each 2019-2021 model year. The only black mark on the Foresters MSDS is the 2019-2020 model year Sport-equipped headlights.
This is due to the fact that it was not equipped with cornering lights like the rest of the lot. In terms of reliability, the new Forester is on par with previous generations.
According to the forester, 420 complaints were received for the 2019 model yearNHTSA. The most common problem is once again the cracked windshield, which seems to keep the windshield repair industry going its own way. Subaru Forester reliability: pros and cons
Sadly, we've found that almost all Subaru Foresters are best avoided. Although Forester is exceptionally secure, it's not because it's unreliable.
In the first three generations (1998-2010), the biggest problem was a blown head gasket. This repair can cost anywhere from $1600 to $1700, or $2300 to $2400 if you also need to replace the timing belt, water pump, rollers, tensioner, and gaskets. The only bright spot comes from the 2011-2013 model years because they didn't have the head gasket issues of their predecessors.
After all, the fourth and fifth generations are victimsbroken windshield. Windshields are generally relatively inexpensive to repair. However, due to Subaru's Eyesight technology, it may cost the ownerover $1,000.

If you are looking for a used Subaru Forester in the market, the recommended years are from 2011 to 2013. They are part of the third generation Forester and it is a time when Subaru equipped the FB25B engine in the Forester, which increased its reliability and quality. . .

Another reason Subarus has some reliability issues has to do with technology issues. In the early to mid-2000s, there were known electrical and technological issues that caused them to not function reliably. It's a good idea to avoid some Subaru vehicles from this era that have a lot of technology.
The last reason Subarus are notorious for their unreliability is their high performance cars like the WRX and WRX STI. People often modify them and end up damaging the engines and internal transmissions. When people damage vehicles and then complain, there is a general feeling in the automotive world that they cannot be trusted.
At what mileage do Subaru head gaskets fail?
It is difficult to judge when a head gasket can fail on a Subaru 2.5 liter boxer engine. These can fail at any point between approximately 50,000 miles and 200,000 miles. There are usually between 100,000 and 150,000 more miles of failures, so now would be the time to check that it hasn't failed yet.
The Subaru 2.5 liter boxer engine is also very popular in the tuning community and modifying these engines can cause the head gasket to fail sooner. Increasing thrust and pressures on the engine puts more stress and strain on the seal which can cause it to fail in less than 20,000 miles.
Subaru head gasket problems have plagued Subaru since they first appeared on the 2.5 liter boxer engine years ago. Today, Subaru has started to produce much more reliable engines and there aren't as many head gasket failures as there were in cars 10 or 15 years ago.

I am the original owner of a 1998 Forester with a 5-speed manual transmission. He is now 24 years old. In all that time he's only run me aground once: the head gaskets have blown, of course. Even so, I managed to get the car to the dealer, so I wasn't really stuck. I replaced the head gaskets with new ones. Once you do that, you're good for quite a while. In 24 years, the car always started and always took me to my destination. I would say it's reliability. The problem with these cars is this: they absolutely *MUST* replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and belt tensioner every 105,000 miles. These are interference engines and if the timing belt fails your engine will be destroyed. Boxer engines suck/leak oil, so you *MUST* keep an eye on the oil level. Of course, with such an old car, many, many things wear out and need to be replaced. I keep track of every penny I spend on this car and even with all the repair and maintenance costs it's cheaper than buying a new car. The biggest factor is depreciation: it reached zero. Unfortunately, parts are running low on this car. I love my Ranger. It has nearly 300,000 miles on it and I will literally slam it into the ground.

Expensive repairs: Forester 2014
My ranger was running great until it hit the 80,000 mile mark and the oil light came on. I took the car to the dealer and it was determined that oil consumption was an issue. Subaru paid for the small block engine replacement and took care of the oil consumption issue for about 6 months and then my oil level was back at 128033 miles. As of August 25, 2020, the car will again undergo an oil consumption check at the dealership. At this point the check engine light came on and the 'P0700 Active' trouble code was diagnosed and 'P2762 History' recommended replacing the valve body assembly, which is somewhat rare. , Subaru stated that repairs are not covered under warranty due to mileage. in the car is more than 100K. The repair cost was $1710 for parts and labor. Note: most of my trips are road miles.

Many repairs in first 5 years/55,000 miles on 2015 Forester
After about a year, I started to notice rust on my lower body. After 40,000 miles we took it to the dealer 4 times for issues. One was a faulty alternator, two from standard recalls, and the third was because the rear strut literally broke into pieces, rendering the car inoperable when parked in the garage. It had to be towed for the latter but was covered by a recent recall. Also the new tires are down to 5/32 after 9000 miles. The car is now 5 years old and has 55,000 miles. Had to replace battery, fan controls weren't working properly, needed another set of new brakes, and had to replace passenger side rear wheel bearing.

2012 Subaru Forester prima
my ranger works great and runs great. He also looks great for a 7 year old. Seats are very comfortable and the car is very spacious. The sunroof is huge and makes the car even more open. You get great gas mileage for an SUV. I love the heated leather seats and the roof rack is great for extra storage. It handles very well and handles corners and holes with ease. It also has many safety features that make it one of the safest vehicles on the market. Four wheel drive makes it the perfect mountain car. Sound is also great and Bluetooth works great.

Subaru Forester 2012 - a completely reliable family vehicle.
A very reliable vehicle. It does well in the snow and handles well. The vehicle is also very comfortable as you can adjust the driver's seat to virtually any position (including adjustable lumbar support). I especially like the heating and air conditioning! I also love the sunroof, it's such a fun feature! As for repair, the brakes were in need of repair (air bubbles in the lines) and the cost of that plus an oil change is quite high. Overall a great vehicle and would recommend as a used buy.

2009 XT Forester - Lemon Law Anyone?
I love how fun my 2009 Forester XT is to drive, but the maintenance costs are incredible once you hit 90,000 miles. I've had blown heads, cracked radiator, flow sensors, power steering pump, turbo hose, stuck calipers, corrosion on rims, bushings, rust, peeling clear coat on turbo vane and spoiler. Not worth driving for fun, luckily most of my repairs are covered under warranty. Currently at 220,000 and I just died in the middle of the road due to a faulty flow/O2 sensor.

The 2011 Forester is still a vehicle worth owning and driving 7 years later.
Many safety features are included to make the main driver feel safer. Excellent visibility through the windshield and rear window. The engine is very reliable and always runs. Even on cold mornings, it doesn't take long for the car to warm up. Despite being larger than a sedan, parking is not difficult. Some convenience features (eg heated seats and sunroof) are only included in the premium package on our model, but that's fine for now. Extremely satisfied. could get a little better gas economy.

Piston/oil and A/C compressor and condenser problem - Forester 2014
I had a problem with the oil light coming on. I found that certain Vin#s had so-called soft pistons. It happened to be Vin and years. I never got up, but I lost oil. You ran an oil consumption test that failed. The pistons were replaced, paid for by Subaru. If you have this problem, have the dealer check and verify the VIN. I also only had to replace the condenser because it was leaking. I still have issues with intermittent hot and cold air. Now I found out that the compressor is faulty.

Mine is a 2012 and I would recommend this SUV if it fits your needs.
I like my Subaru Forester. It's a basic model, no frills, full power, sunroof, etc. But it is a simple, functional and reliable vehicle. What I particularly like is that the seats are very comfortable. Having owned Toyotas in the past, one of my biggest gripes is that they can be downright uncomfortable, especially on longer trips. The engine has a little grit, starts up and gets me good on steep climbs.

Subaru Forester 2013, adorei!
My 2013 Subaru Forester is comfortable and reliable. I have never had any major problems or repairs in my 6 years of owning the vehicle. All functions work. It has been on long trips, we have never had any issues with comfort or reliability on long trips. When it comes to fuel consumption, it's not that bad. The only thing I wish was different is the performance. I would like a little more power.

Lots of problems with my Forester 2006
My car is a used vehicle but has problems with the engine, cruise control and catalytic converter. The car makes strange noises and takes a while to accelerate. Sometimes the brake pad and throttle stick when I try to back up and park somewhere parallel, leading me to believe the car is unsafe to take my kids.

My 2013 Subaru Forester is an awesome adventure car.
I recently purchased my 2013 Subaru Forester! I'm very happy with the four wheel drive, sound system and accessories that Subaru offers. I've been thinking about buying a Subaru for a while now and I really fell in love with this car because of the gas mileage and more. All accessories work great and I recently purchased a roof rack that fits perfectly with no issues.

Audio issue with Forester 2015
My phone remains unpaired so I can't answer or receive calls and listen to my music. I've taken it to the dealer several times; I was told that my car radio is an old model, it does not support the new phone update and therefore cannot sync. Dealer said there is nothing he can do about it, he cannot change or upgrade the audio or sound system.

The 2018 Forester is unreliable and can be dangerous to drive.
The auto start/stop function is a BIG problem, very DANGEROUS, if it doesn't work right, the car will stop abruptly at any moment. Another big problem is that the CVT transmission doesn't last more than 5 years without major problems. I do not recommend this vehicle, it's a shame because I really like the look and the 4 wheel drive when it works well.

It's a 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5x Premium.
It is a 4WD vehicle with a very rare manual gearbox and panoramic sunroof. A sunroof is typically not available on any vehicle that is also a manual transmission. It has the best gas mileage of any non-hybrid SUV. Extremely reliable. Very comfortable and excellent performance.

I love my 2011 Subaru Forester.
I recently bought my 2011 Subaru Forester and I love it. Drives super well with 130,000 miles and is very comfortable. It has bluetooth and a rear camera which makes it look even newer and mine was very affordable. It's been almost 6 months since I bought it and I haven't had any problems since.

2015 Subaru Forester: Nothing But Trouble
We had to change the front right axle twice and the front left axle once, among many other problems. This car had nothing but issues. The horn stopped working and Subaru wants $500 to replace it. The air conditioning doesn't work anymore (since summer is coming here in Texas). The other problems are too numerous to count.

The navigation system is bad - Forester 2019
It doesn't allow you to enter addresses like a normal NAV system. You have to type everything into a search box, and searches are often unsuccessful, even for common landmarks and street names. Voice recognition is terrible and completely useless. You paid 1500 for top of the line NAV system and it's not complete GARBAGE!

Rangers 2011 great in all weathers.
It's a mostly reliable car that runs well in all conditions. Had some issues with three oil leaks (knock on wood so far). My only other complaint is that the car is bigger than I would have liked. My 2004 Ranger was smaller and I like that size. I also like that the rear window is big enough to see through.

Ad with incorrect fuel consumption figures for Forester 2018
This is one of the worst vehicles I've ever owned and I will never buy a Subaru again. I only get 15 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. I have had 2 multiple leaks on the car since the new start and I hope it stays that way. Subaru refuses to acknowledge poor fuel economy as no engine codes are posted.

Subaru Forester 2013 review.
There are few or no issues with the vehicle. performance is good; Drives well, gas mileage, all that. It's very reliable and I can count on it to get me where I need to be safe. It's pretty comfortable overall, pretty average. And the qualities are also good and average for the year.

The 2012 model I have doesn't allow for steering wheel adjustment, which is a little awkward at times.
Very few problems. It's four wheel drive, fuel efficient, big enough, has room for cargo, and is easy to maneuver. Good performance and years of good performance records. No real issues. You can expect to drive well over 100,000 miles before you have any problems. I had 4 and they lasted years. very reliable.

2012 Subaru Forester review.
I've never had any problems with this car, it's reliable and comfortable. Two features I would have liked better were speaker quality and mpg. Normally my car can get between 20 and 26 mpg. One issue I've had with this car is that it's slow to accelerate.

2011 Subaru Forester Comfort meets safety.
The car was purchased in 2011 and is an SUV. It has heated seats which is a plus in the winter months. Safety is higher with Subaru. Some mechanical issues but overall it was reliable. It's a very comfortable ride, although it can be quite noisy on freeways at 60+ mph at times.

2012 Subaru Forester Basics
It works well and I find it very convenient. Since it's old, I don't know if it's reliable, but every problem I've had with it has been quickly and easily resolved. The characteristics of the car are simple and average. It doesn't have fancy features, but it has all the basic features and is easy to use.

2012 Subaru Forester with heated seats and sunroof.
It can be processed well. It does well in rain and snow. I like the size, but I wish it was a little bigger. It's a 4-door hatchback. Large area in the back with folding seats. I like the heated seats and I love the sunroof. It has a decent uptake when it comes to traffic. brakes well.

2011 Subaru Forester great overall but burns oil.
This model burns oil very quickly. I think there is a class action lawsuit for all 2011-1016 Subaru models. This car is great in the snow, especially since I live in NYC. I also love the Bluetooth hands-free functions. This car is very spacious and very practical for long trips.

The 2013 Subaru Forester seats five with plenty of trunk space.
I love my Subaru, it's a great family car. The only issue I have with this vehicle is that the air conditioning sucks and burns oil. It worked great in the snow but as soon as I moved south I found the air conditioning barely working so I checked and many have had this issue.

Subaru Forester 2013 still has it!
My vehicle has no problems! It drives super smooth even though it's a little older. It rarely rusts and I've never had a problem with it. I always buy Subarus! It is very comfortable and always easy to clean. My dogs love to sit in the spacious backseats.

The 2011 Subaru Forester is good.
My Subaru Forester is very comfortable and easy to drive. I've only had traction issues in the winter. Accelerates quickly on the highway and the cruise control is perfect. The sound system is excellent, it has Bluetooth, place for auxiliary cable and USB.

2011 Subaru Forester 2.5XT Touring-Test.
It uses gas quickly, but is very reliable in snow and rain. When it's windy, it sometimes blows on the street. Seat warmers are good. It's had a lot of mechanical issues over the past few months, but it's from 2011 so that's to be expected.

Plata 2011 Subaru Forester.
My car is great. It's comfortable, great seat warmer. The view is great. However, it would be great if there was a third row of seats. It performs amazing and it feels super reliable. I had zero notable issues.

I have a 2018 Subaru Forester with 2 recalls and a repair for the supercharger under warranty Subaru told me if you're splitting hairs it's a recall. I would never buy a Subaru again

My 2010 Forester burned 3 sets of tires and brakes quickly
I put 3 sets of tires and brakes on it and it only has 36,000 miles on it. I guess this shouldn't have happened since I bought it new. Also, my air conditioner is leaking. I think I have a lemon.

Subaru Forester 2013 with good fuel consumption
I've had two Subaru's that had issues with the vehicle's electrical system. I love the gas mileage and all the trunk space. My car also needs a new airbag as the old one has been recalled.

2011 Subaru Forester 2.5x
I love the Subaru's safety features and the AWD system. Be aware of the year of manufacture of the vehicle you are purchasing as there were some oil consumption issues in 2009-2013.

I have had nothing but good experiences with my 2012 Subaru Forester.
It always starts and works fine. All-wheel drive works great all year round. Plenty of space inside. I lowered the back seats and had enough room to tow 8 pallets in the back.

So far, I've had a great run with the 2010 Forester. My daughter bought it new. Bought from him in 2017 with 78,000 miles. I currently have 158k on it. So far no problems.

Attention Buyers: Speed Sensor Problem on 2010 Forester
Although the car is high, the seat is low in the car. We have ongoing issues with speed sensor failures. I had to change the engine.

Forester 2019 camera already broke
I've had the 2019 Forest Sport for less than 3 months and I took it to the shop for a prescription issue. They tell me they don't like asking for a new camera.

2014 Subaru Forester Owner
We've owned our Subaru Forester Limited since new (2014). Knock on wood, we had no issues. It turned out to be a great vehicle.
